In our line of work, planning a marquee for a wedding reception is often compared to the precision required to execute a rocket launch. Well maybe not a rocket launch, but there is a lot to consider, plan and put in place to ensure your wedding reception is just perfect. This is where we come into our own.

In our line of work, planning a marquee for a wedding reception is often compared to the precision required to execute a rocket launch. Well maybe not a rocket launch, but there is a lot to consider, plan and put in place to ensure your wedding reception is just perfect. This is where we come into our own.

What to consider first when planning your Wedding Marquee

Hopefully we have been able to pique your interest and fire your imagination and now you would like to get an idea of what size marquee you would need. To help you on your way, we have put together a short list of questions to consider.

A little guide to get you started:

First, the relatively straight forward question: how many guests will be attending. Not only for the formal wedding breakfast, but how many additional guests are you planning to invite to the party afterwards?

If you have a large number of young children attending, you may want to consider setting-up a play area to keep them entertained.

Next, you need to think about your running order: the welcome reception, dining, the all-important cutting the cake and first dance and party to round off your perfect day. This is where attention to detail really comes into play.

If you are planning to meet and greet your guests as they arrive and allow them to mingle with a glass of champagne before they sit for dinner, you will need a reception area. This works really well and, with the addition of some big comfy sofas, creates an ideal space for guests to sit and chat away from the dancefloor when the party is in full swing! This space will also help accommodate your after-dinner guests too.

Add a bar, and you’ve got the perfect place for people to relax, catch up with friends they haven’t seen in an age and watch over proceedings from afar.

If space is tight, you can of course use the dance floor as a reception area, however, it still leaves you with challenge of accommodating after-dinner guests and a bar. From our experience, this also compromises the natural flow within the marquee as you transition from reception, to dinner, to party.

Next you need to consider your wedding breakfast. Do you want a top-table, if so how many guests will be joining you on the table? How do you want to seat your remaining guests? Round tables of eight, or ten work perfectly, as they allow people to chat and see everyone around the table; but maybe you prefer the more formal style of long banqueting tables? These decisions affect how much dining space you will need.

Are you thinking of a lavish buffet, or a silver-service banquet? A buffet requires additional space to present the food and for guests to mingle before they choose what they want, whereas silver-service requires a little more space around the tables for the waiting staff to serve your food.

Then there’s the food preparation and service. We can partition of part off your marquee for this, however, we recommend using a separate catering tent, as the last thing you want is the sound of banging plates and pans intruding on your Best Man’s speech! The size of the catering area is usually specified by the caterers and is dependent upon the extent of on-site food preparation and the number of guests.

Are you looking to create a high-end nightclub, or a more traditional formal setting to dance the night away? Either way, planning a dance floor area is not as straight forward as it might first seem. For example; the space required for a disco and DJ set is very different to the amount of space required to host a barn dance with a live band!

Then there is the lighting, the essential ingredient to creating the perfect atmosphere. And trust us, we can help here too! From a laser light show for that nightclub feel, fairy lights and softly illuminated tables to create that intimate feel to classic chandeliers and uplighters to frame a formal dance floor.
